Ealing Broadway target of summer crime crackdown
The Mayor of London has identified Ealing town centre as one of 20 crime hotspots. Richmond, Hounslow and Uxbridge placed in second tier of targets
Ealing Broadway will see increased police patrols and intelligence operations as part of the Home Office’s Safer Streets Summer programme.
Ealing Town centre has been identified as one of 20 crime hotspots in London. Others include Shepherds Bush Green, Kingston and the West End.
Richmond town centre, Hounslow High Street, and Uxbridge town centre will also receive additional policing but were placed in the second tier of targets.
According to the Mayor of London, the top twenty town centre and high streets make up only a small percentage of London’s population but account for almost 10 percent of knife crime, 24 percent of theft from a person offences and six per cent of all anti-social behaviour calls.
Ealing Safer Neighbourhood Panel heard on Tuesday evening that Territorial Support Group officers were already operating in West Ealing, Hanwell and Southall to support local police but would also broaden their focus to include Ealing Broadway. Police have made 28 arrests in West Ealing this month.
The initiative was launched in Enfield on Wednesday morning by London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes, and Enfield Council Leader Councillor Elgin Erbil.
Jukes said: “Our intelligence and data-led approach to tackle the crimes that matter most to Londoners – such as shoplifting, robbery and anti-social behaviour – is already working. We’re arresting 1,000 more criminals each month, neighbourhood crime is down 19 per cent and we’ve solved 163 per cent more shoplifting cases this year.”
According to the Mayor of London, there has been a reduction in many types of crime in London in the first six weeks of this financial year.
Knife crime - down by 18.1 percent
Residential burglary - down by 17.7 percent
Theft from the person – down by 15.6 percent
Personal robbery - down by 12.8 percent
